Events in Marrakech – May 2018
As summer approaches, May sees ever rising temperatures (typically 20° to 30°), longer days and excellent sunshine hours (an average ten hrs/day) and very little rain. Major events for locals are Labour Day (1st May) and the beginning of Ramadan (15th May) but there is also a wealth of music festivals and sporting events to attract the summer visitor from overseas.
'Festival of the Roses' – held in a romantic location south of the former garrison town of Ouarzazate, this is one of the most popular of all Moroccan festivals, not least for its location a short drive from the romantic Draa Valley within sight of the soaring peaks of the High Atlas Mountains. The event, celebrating the height of the rose season with traditional music, dancing and feasting, takes place over three days in Kelaa-des-Mgouna, an oasis village famous for its production of rose water. The village stands on the picturesque river Dadès in what is known as the ‘valley of the roses’.
Other events to consider during a visit in May include:
Mawazine Festival - usually held in late May/early June, this international music festival takes place in Rabat which, though quite a distance from Marrakech, is definitely worth visiting for its concerts of contemporary music, art exhibitions and street entertainers. There is a good rail service from Marrakech to Rabat.
17th ISF Gymnasiade – scheduled to take place in Marrakech from 2nd to 9th May 2018, this ‘Olympic event for youngsters’ is a major sporting gathering for schools giving young students from around the world the opportunity to experience the spirit of international sporting competition & fair play, friendship & cultural diversity. Organised by the ISF (International School Sport Federation), it will appeal to sports enthusiasts of all ages.
Trans Atlas Marathon - scheduled to be held from the 4th to 14th May, this is a gruelling endurance event for extreme runners from around the world described as the ‘toughest footrace in Morocco’. Taking place over six stages it crosses large parts of the High Atlas which mark the transition between coastal and desert climates.
