Day Trips from Marrakech - Imlil and Armound
During spring and early summer one of the most popular day excursions from Marrakech is the trip south to Imlil and Armound in the Atlas Mountains for the chance to admire some spectacular scenery and mountain flora in full bloom, as well as stunning views of towering Mount Toubkal (as high as Mont Blanc). The villages of Imlil and Armoud, located just an hour and a half's drive from the Ochre City, are well worth visiting with or without a guide.
Mountain treks
One of the most pleasant outings from Ilmil is the ‘Waterfalls & Armoud’ hike. About 1 km from Ilmil, the waterfalls can be reached via several, easily navigable, though not necessarily well-defined, trails (but don’t worry, friendly locals will be happy to point you in the right direction!). Enjoyable at any time, the trip is particularly rewarding at this time of year, especially when you stop to sample a glass of freshly-squeezed, tangy orange juice while admiring your surroundings.
After pausing here to enjoy the wonderful scenery, you can continue for another mile or so to the quaint Berber village of Armoud with its magnificent views of the summit of Mount Toubkal. While exploring the charming alleyways of this lovely little village you may be given the chance to enjoy a cup of mint tea or even, perhaps, a traditional meal in a local guest house - a great chance to experience Berber hospitality!
Taking a different trail back to Ilmil, you will complete a circular route by joining a delightful stream as it traverses lush forests and meets ancient irrigation systems that carry water from the slopes of the High Atlas to the fertile valley below.
